So, no surprise here. Of course, anything that has Jennifer Lopez's name on it, I'm interested!
I remember reading in Latina Magazine that she was going to be producing some things on the channel, and to be quite honest, I didn't even know whether or not we had NuvoTV. Ryan recently fixed an issue we had with Comcast about a month ago and boom! We had the channel!
Last week, I was scrolling around on the TV and decided to watch NuvoTV multiple times. I watched Mario Lopez interview Latino celebrities, a reality show based on the dancers for Jennifer Lopez's world tour, and an hour long special on Jennifer Lopez's life. I was enveloped.
The interesting thing to me was that though the programming was in English, there were commercials in Spanish.
It's a pretty known fact that I have always struggled with my cultural identity, due to the fact that I was not raised speaking Spanish. The basic reason is that my family is indigenous to the territory currently known as the United States. That being said, at one point we were just indigenous. Couple of years later, due to colonization and territorial boundaries, we were Mexican. A couple of years after that, due to land treaties and boundaries, we became Americans overnight. Our first language was our indigenous language, and then Spanish. At one point, speaking Spanish was looked down upon. Students would get their hands slapped by teachers for speaking the only language that they knew, employees would get talked to by their bosses saying that if they continued to speak Spanish, they would lose their job. So because of all that, my socialization had very little Spanish in it. English was my first language and Spanish became the language I learned in order to reclaim my cultural identity. My former last name had given people the impression that I could speak Spanish and I simply became tired of explaining everything I explained above. So I learned and I excelled.
I really appreciate everything that channels like NuvoTV and Mun2 are doing for people like me. It's relieving to be able to watch a network with both languages. Though I can now sit through programming on Univision or Telemundo and understand everything, it's comforting to watch channels that reflect my Chicana experience. It's cool knowing that Jenny from the Block and Anjelah Johnson had the same experience with Spanish.
It's obvious that there is programming for Latinos and Spanish speakers but it's so awesome to have channels and programming for Latinos with the American experience.
Big ups to channels like these who are making little pocha girls feel proud. Loves it!
